Similar to the Tomcat instance setup, my Apache instance setup template lets you create separate Apache httpd instances that share the main binaries.

Note that this is not the same as virtual hosting. By default, all virtual hosts share a process space and run as the same user. Separate instances, on the other hand, can run as separate users, do not share process space, and can run with completely different configurations. This is useful when you want to create an N-tier application setup and use a tweaked httpd (say, specially tuned for mod_perl, PHP, or Ruby) as the "application server" tier.
